  • Coil Test completed

The board members were kind enough to share information with me about search coils. I wound 2 coils 248mm in diameter, foam construction, about 22mm thick. I rolled the foam form on edge, against a wooden dowel. One coil had #27 enamel at 330 microhenrys, second 175/46 litz wire basket weave 350 microhenrys. The litz wire coil was faster, and worked well. The 1st coil work worked but not as good as the second.

I might add Far Circuits in Illinois will produce the P.I. circuit board for 10 US dollars, the shown "inside the Metal Detector book" . I would like to thank the board members for all the information and help. Good luck on your projects Jim.

Can you post a picture of your new coils? It is not surprising that the Litz worked better as solid enamel wire has the greatest unit interwire capacitance of all types I have used. It is that capacitance which slows down a coil.

    Regards,

    Dan

Thanks James. Your pictures are a great help. If you have not already done so take a look at the 'CHANCE PI coil' thread to see a coil type known as '3DSS' that stands for 3 Dimensional wind/Self Shielding. If you wind a litz coil of this type it should have even faster speed and be self shielding.

          Happy building
