  • 14" LAND CRAFT COIL SHELL

i have a 14" land craft two piece coil shell...whats the best way to seal the two halves so water proof.
also what lower rod do i need as my whites lower rod is too narrow to fit the coil bracket.

    hello DAVERAVE,

i've used many landcraft 14" coil shells for my projects.

    here's what i do :

i set the coils in the "upper" shell with superglue,
    once it's tacked into place,
do a complete run round with superglue to stop any movement.

then clip on the lower cover and hold in place gently with many cheap G clamps.

using pure acetone in a syringe ,
( nail varnish remover-pound shop-the small bottled one)
    (not the big one-that's diluted)
run around the joining groove gently applying a drop at a time and watch it
    run round the joint.

leave clamped for about an hour.

then fill same syringe with thin spirit based lacquer
(poundshop again, small tin clear lacquer.
and run it around the joint,
    inside and out.

    leave overnight.
    job done.

    oh,
i also fill mine with that resin // expanding foam glue :
gorilla glue // tiger glue ( other glues available........)
    before lid is put on,
makes the whole thing more rigid.

    oh,
    end note :
careful with the mounting ears on the coil shell,
the last 2 i got were defective,
    poss bad casting,
    they just "fell apart"
when i tightened the nylon bolt,
    had to re-enforce the ears.

    sorry,
couldn't find a picture of a coil with the clamps on hanging from a rope from the window rail.......LOL.

Hi Dooley.....many thanks for your info....im using this coil shell for pulse detector only single coil....i did find it strange the cable gland mounting on back edge of coil...so ive used a spiral gland near to coil mounting bracket....i used scotch 24 shielding for the coil but had to remove it as capacitance was a whopping 250 pf so im going to try some graphite paint...will a fisher lower rod fit the coil bracket as my whites lower rod is too narrow ???

        hello DAVERAVE.

the space between the "ears" is quite large isn't it.......
big enough to take ANY shaft.

ive been using whites 3 piece space saver rod kits,
and some thick grommets from rs components,
then just shave then to the right thickness.

        yes,
the hole for the cable could have done with being nearer the ears couldn't it......LOL.

my last couple of PI's i shielded with the coated mylar shield out of cheap SAT cable,
didn't seem to slow it down much,
        didn't measure capacitance though.

        oh,
the pure acetone "melts" the casings to bond them together,
        so don't apply to much,
just enough to run around the joint.

yes dave fisher lower rods will fit at least 1266x's do.
one tip to tighten up that joint without strain is to use rubber washers you can make them as thick of as thin as you need, they work great.
