  • Do coils with the same Khz work ??.

    Hello ,

    Maybe a weird question :

    I have a Mikron Nrg-100. ] I know ; not one of the best ].
    It has a 27 cm /12.5 Khz DD coil.
    Now the coil is broken.
    Want to make the detector compleet again.
    It has a 5 pin plug like the Garrett ace 250.

    Can you change coils with the same Khz on a metaldetector ??.
    Or do you need to have a coil from the same brand ??.

    Only thing i know is that coils from Fisher are compatible with some Bounty Hunter machines.

    Please help on this problem ??.

    As a general rule it has to be from the same detector.

    Even coils from the same manufacture often don't work on their other models. Frequency is only part of it. Inductance and phase also need to be the same.

    Not familiar with your detector so don't know if any others will work.

      Some of the Eastern European detectors are based on American designs, so they may have used the exact same coil design. You would have to try it and see. Generally, an incompatible coil won't damage anything.

        Ok.
        The Mikron is Eastern European ,and look like a Rex Delta 6.
        When the coil is incompatible , what will happen ??.
        Can i test this in some way.

          Rex and Micron are the same brand.
          Build an adapter: from additional connector, some pieces of wire and socket, that suit to your new coil connector and to Micron housing socket.
          Proper connected TX to TX and RX to RX, nothing bad can happen, and you will see, if your new coil pass.

          You need to build adapter to not destroy coil cable, something like this:

            As long as you get the Tx , Rx and Ground on the correct pins Chances are Nothing bad will happen even if the coil does not work as well or at all.

              That,s cool !!.
              But how do you know what the Tx and the Rx wires are on a metaldetector ??.
              Do you need to measure Tx and Rx ??.

                Do research on the suspect coil. You should be able to figure out the original pin out on most coils. If not you would have to measure . In general the Rx coil has a higher Impedance and DC Resistance then the Tx. Some coils have Components like Capacitors and or Resisters within the Coil housing and obtaining readings using DC can be all but impossible. You would need to use a test signal .

                    So can i measure the value from a other smaller coil ??.
                    Is that the same value on small and bigger coils ??.

                      Hello! Yes, of course. Look at the capacitor in the red circle on the left up corner. On your pcb, is possible to be different capacitor. It adjusts ground balance.

                      So wiht a bigger coil , i may have to use a other capacitor.

                          I'm thinking you can find the Tx and Rx coil wires on the detector from PCB. The Transistor would be associated with the TX. OOOps I labeled rx and tx in reverse.

                            Has a Tx and a Rx , like a + and - . ??
                            Are de Omhs on a normal coil the same as on a Bigger coil ?.

                              Yes they should be in the ball park. Larger coils just have less winding but same amount of wire.

                              May have + /- but I don't think it would be a issue other then the PCB end. One wire (-) could be associated with the Shield going to Ground.
