  • Anti Static Mat as Shieilding

Playing with Basket Coils . Wondering have any of you played with using Anti Static Mat as Shielding? You can't wrap this stuff but may work for Basket and Mono type coils?

Purchased some to play with on the Basket type. What do you thing ?

    They say in description:

    Green Layer Resistivity:108~1010Ω
    Black Layer Resistivity:104~106Ω

without specify at which distance it was measured.

Can you check resistivity between two points at 1" (or at 1cm) distance?

Otherwise, if specification data are true, it is suitable for shielding.

With surface resitivities of 10^4 Ohms/square minimum, it will be useless for shielding, which seems best with 500 - 5000 Ohms/sq. Far cheaper to just get some black conductive anti-static bags for your experiments. At least it can be cut and wrapped easily. But I measured some at about 100^4 ohms/square a few years ago, and decided it would be ineffective, so never tried it out as a shield ( I was having 'wet grass' problems, and was going to tape the black-bag sheet onto the bottom of the coil, with a wire joining it to circuit ground, at the coil plug)

Unable to get resistance readings from the stuff. Even with DVM probes 1/4 inch apart the stuff shows Zero Conductivity... Oh, Well the Wife now has a Giant Mouse Pad for her desk. LOL

Probably it is about usual Chinese problem with West transcript and should be corrected as this:

          Green Layer Resistivity: 10^8 ~ 10^10 Ω
          Black Layer Resistivity: 10^4 ~ 10^6 Ω

Static electricity peak to which this mat is intended to protect electronic circuit is usually in range of 1000V,
which is somewhat different problem from our "capacitive to earth" shielding problem.

Yes just to bleed off Static. Not Conductive enough for the job.

Anti static mats are designed to be high resistance to limit current and reduce spikes

LOL, And stop you from getting Toasted if you do something Stupid, Eaa? I was thinking it would work. Just too Much Resistance.
