Just something I saw on another site somewhere. I need to make some new coils, but I want them to come out really nice like factory made style. It is kinda embarrasing hunting with crappy looking homemade.

I sent Don Bowers a PM (or was it an email) ages ago about a full coil mold setup for sale on Ebay? It was just up the road from him from memory. I immediately thought of him, but he never replied. These pics look like that exact setup. Perhaps it was he that bought it?
I just purchased 2 casings off sinko1 (aka crazy-tech.net) at very reasonable prices with free postage via fleabay, a 28DD and a 2x21 OO. It is such a crying shame that postage cost from the US to Oz is so prohibitive......

Vacuum forming is cheap and easy to do, but abs is no longer cheap material and making the molds I not so easy, so buying ready made is probably the best way to go. However, I have many projects in the works, so be needing many different coils and different sizes too.

Are those CNC made or you have other method of making them?

I literally just bought some coil shells from Don Bowers (PayPal'ed him this morning).
Have been emailing back and forth checking on what shells he has and our detector projects. So he does still make and sells these.
He also lives only 100 miles (160km) from me.

These are not my molds! As I stated in second post, I saw these on another site. As for making them, I have no idea, but they look to be made of wood, at least most of them.

                    Coil stencils

Some of them are plywood. Wood has strains only in 1 direction and in other is fragile (in thin ribs mainly). So I also mill all my stencils out of birch plywood with black/brown waterproof coating and I use nitro laquer for edges to keep it water (and mould) proof. On some of those stencils you can see mould on nearly half of their surface. Moisture and mould also twist these stencils... something you really do not want if you count time and material you sacrifice for it.

I have an interesting question. Back in 1954 and Iworked in a brand new industry, which was extruding polyethelyne plastic into black pipe, for sprinkler systems. We also extruded Polybutera into straight rigid lengths for gas lines. Now back then, it was difficult to find plastic pellets to melt. So we took the colored plastic wrapping liners that they wrapped car tires, and melted them. We used carbon black powder to color the plastic for the black pipe.

There are so many throw away plastic containers today, such as plastic milk jugs. water jugs, bottles, and so on and so forth. I think all a guy would have to do is build an oven or use an oven outside, to divert the fumes up and away.

New industry? Plastic for metal detector coils.

Maybe there is someone with chemistry degree who can give us way to recycle plastic milk jugs into coils shell material. Just throw in some old plastic jugs at one end and out comes the coil cover at the other end, any size you want, all controlled by rasberry pi.

Yep! Still making them. It gets easier as I have made so many now. Probably 5 or 600. Anyone know where I can get forms made on a CNC mill? All mine are painstakingly made with a jigsaw. The wooden forms don't last forever, plus they shrink a little over time.

Wondering if adding Carbon could be done for electrostatic shielding.

Just ensure that the plastic to milk jugs are made from is NOT Bio-degradable.
                              Otherwise good idea.
