A Fat Small DD Coil

i'm just posting this out of my lack of coil knowledge, redirect me to another post if possible, haven't seen it discussed before...

anyways just wanted to know if its possible to make a small 6-8 inch round dd coil perform depthwise like a 18-20 round dd coil by making an extremely 'fat' 6 or 8 inch round dd coil that's like 5 inches tall that has many many windings making it thick and dough-nut shape in appearance, would it take more volts to this type of small fat coil to generate its field and make it usable? is this even possible?

Garrett use to make a Coil everyone called the Hockey Puck. It was only like 5" round and 3 inches tall if I remember right. Sure was hot on smaller targets but Like all other coils it would only get you as deep as it was wide.
