  • Single layer air coilair

Been playing around with a 8 inch single layer air coil (see picture). Kind of interesting results. Using a Surf PI and coil made from a 8 inch card board tube and 28ga. Stranded silver plated teflon wire. Although it lost only less than a inch of depth there was no weak single, using a gold ring and a American quarter it would pick up a strong tone at about 7 inches with out any weak tones as you get close. It would get a solid tone as you get close to the range of it instead of starting with a weak tone and get stronger as you get closer. I may be new at this stuf but found that very interesting and really don’t know why. Compared it with a flat spiral 10 inch coil made of speaker wire and a 10 inch bundle coil made from the same 28ga. Stranded silver plated teflon wire. Without changing any adjustments on the surf the 2 other coils would start with a weak signal and get stronger as you get closer to the coil. Also the single layer coil pick up range was centered more to the center of the coil with out hardly any side pick up range. I kinda figured it would have picked up more on the sides than towards the center but not so.
Probably just a bunch of babbling from somebody that don’t know anything but I thought the results was very interesting and not what I expected at all. Any comments?

Trying different delay times on it now although I don’t know what I’m really doing. But finding longer delay times will shorten it’s range dramatically
