  • Will urethane foam harm the coating on magnet wire?

I wound a 24" coil for my Delta Pulse. I'm using a 1/2" PVC pipe for the body. I cut a slot in the body to allow installing the coil. I'd like to foam the body to hold the coil in place, but wondered if the foam would damage the coil. Thanks

This stuff is an expanding foam. It expands to fill gaps and voids

you need Монтажная пена с низким коэффициентом расширения

            FOAM LOW EXPANSION

              Hi Jim

"Great Stuff" foam is ok. I have used it for many years. Do not use Dap brand as it is corrosive to copper and solder. Some silicone adhesives are corrosive. It turns out some of these products use citric acid as an activator. Industry uses special silicone adhesives which are non corrosive like Loctite RTV

Correct, most of the common silicon adhesives are corrosive. There are 'electronics' grades that is not.

I would TEST the foam with some of the wire you use.
There are various materials used to coat the wire and many types of foam.
So testing is the only way to be sure the foam/wire will not react.

I do use a polyurethane wood finish to coat coils and does not damage the wire insulation. I did tests before using on a coil.

I couldn't find the foam you stated, KT.

I knew testing was the best idea, but the foam hardens in the tube, so if you only use a small amount, you might as well throw the can away....LOL. I was hoping to avoid that. From what Altra said, it looks like it's OK. Maybe I'll wrap the coil with some thin plastic just to be sure. Maybe cut strips from a garbage bag. That should keep the foam from contacting the wire.

                      Hi Jim,
I used to hate using the cans of foam due to the waste until I saw this handy tip.
