  • Best coil design for surf PI

Hi, I am planning to build a mono coil for a surf PI that has a diameter of around 10 inches. Are there any key factors that influence the depth? I am aiming for a coil inductance of around 400uH. Should I try and maximise or minimise the coil resistance? i.e. should I use thin or thick enamelled wire? What about the winding capacitance? Is this a big deal?

If you have not already done so, you should give this article by BBsailor a thorough read. It contains virtually everything you need to know concerning making a simple mono-coil.

good but not had actual in modern time. we mean FASTEST BACKET coil.
yes, new matter for you. unknown for you. sometimes DUAL FIELD BASKET coil.

Here is a kit from the US, obviously not the same Long Board layout.

You might be better off just getting a PCB from Silverdog.

There is no PCB for the basket coil. It is a cut frame. It is all explained in the link that I posted for you above....
                Cheers

doing from fiberboard, take two nails and lath, cut by them. hammer nails in wood lath on one radius size, cut,
do same with another radius size. you get the ring.
                  then cut slots.

check the word i give a pic

Does a basket coil still require a shield to reduce effect of ground capacitance?

Hello guys analyzing the datasheets of the operatives a great quality replacement would be the Burn Brown OPA637

A 3DSS Coil does not require shielding,,It 'Self-shields' due to its geometry,,,I use them on all my P.I's and I have never had any issues,,until something better comes along I won't use anything else. They're easy to build, a little time consuming, and require more wire than a bundle wrap etc, but a lot less capacitance that makes for a faster coil that you don't have to shield. Check out the 'Chance P.I Build' thread if you have never built one,,great reference for the 3DSS. Regards, Marty.

Hi Marty which PI have you been using ?

The first P.I I ever made was the 'Surf' and I use a 257UH 3DSS with that. I use 300UH 3DSS with my 'Mirage'. I use a 350UH 3DSS with my 'Minipulse Rev D and E'. I use a 350UH 3DSS with the 'Barracuda'. I use a 350UH with my 'Pickini 4' (Which found me a diamond encrusted 18ct gold ring at over 12") and a 350UH 3DSS with my 'Felezjoo' (Which I'm still experimenting with). I made a 3DSS for my 'Gold-Max P.I' (Elliot) but haven't worked out yet why I'm having shielding issues with that no matter what coil I try. I hope that helps somewhat? I bind them with thin medical gauze bandage and just fibreglass them afterwards though I'm still in the process of building my updated Vacuum former so I can form proper shells for them. Regards, Marty.

Hi Marty, sounds like you have been having good success with the 3Dss, that ring is a bonus !, what diameter was that P4 coil ?
One day I will test one on our goldfields, it will be interesting to see how it handles our ground
