  • Winding my first coil

I'm experimenting with building my own metal detector loosely based off the "USB Projects" forum. I built the TGSL coil winding jig out of scrap MDF and some 1/4" dowels and just wound my first coil:

It took two tries to figure out how to tie it without everything coming apart. I'm using some old 0.7 mm dia magnet wire, so I've changed some of the coil and design parameters from the TGSL to reduce weight (the ~100 windings recommended by TGSL would weigh a lot with this thick wire). Going to tie off more sections with dental floss, stiffen the coil with flexible epoxy, and try a polyurethane + graphite powder shielding.

I chose target inductances to match the Neco Desarrollo "Smart Hunter" project, as it's the most similar to what I'm trying to build.
