You do not connect a DD coil in series. The TX and RX are separate.

I'm guessing you mean "search head/coil", not "search file". A mono coil will detect the deepest - even in salt water, but a DD coil may provide some advantage in heavier mineralised ground. If you provide your email address, I'll send you a copy of some useful build documents (too large to add here).
