  • Unusual concentric coplanar arrangement

This patent describes a concentric type search coil arrangement in which a nulling coil sits around and is closely coupled to the TX coil, the RX coil is larger than the TX coil and sits on the outside. It gets better.
In this arrangement it is the nulling coil and the RX coil which are connected in series!

Yes, that's an Omega coil, also called (by White's) a "4B" coil.

I suppose they didn't realize Alexander Graham Bell did the same thing in 1881.

This type of coil has been around for at least 40 years. I wonder if it would perform better for the Voodoo project than using a bucking coil arrangement?

Hello, for having done this test, but with a 30cm omega .. the result is passable. this is written in the voodoo coil tests for the month of december.

Robert Penland got a patent on it in 1969, it was called an Omega coil. The new Whites Electronics 1975 Coinmaster V Supreme came (George Calvin Payne patent) out with this Omega coil. This detector was the FIRSt VLF machine. And the FIRST as an ALL METAL ONLY machine, with no Discrimination circuit inside it. Not sure why, but later on Whites came out with their own new coil for the Coinmaster V Supreme and other models.

An omega coil construction is detailed in the MAGNUM IB DETECTOR project, on the "Metal Detectors" tab on the home page.
It's harder to pinpoint with, but possibly easier to null than your typical concentric coil.
