  • LCR-Meter

    Hi all,

How are your experiences with an LCR-Meter. Which is a good LCR-Meter (hand-held) for measuring search coils? What kind of LCR-Meter I should look for and how much should it cost?
Should it show/measure the "Q" factor as well? How about the accuracy, frequency range, inductor range?
Can someone give me a recommendation?

    Chris,

I've used a high-end HP meter we have at work, until I bought a BK Precision 878. I like the BK better than the HP. It correlated very well with the HP measurements, and was able to measure some coils for which the HP would not give stable readings.

The BK 878 has autoranging, 120Hz & 1kHz, and D/Q. I don't use the Q feature, don't think it will have much use for search coils. Instead, measure the self-resonance and extract the self-capacitance.

The 878 sells for over $200, I got mine on eBay for $125 in new condition. BK also has a non-autoranging model, the 875, which is easy to find on eBay for $50-75, but I don't know how it compares.

I also have the 878, A Very Good Unit. My only complaint is that I wich it Had a Higher Frequency test for Measuring Q.

It Compares Very well to my Sencore LC102, Capacitor/Inductor Analyzer, For Inductance Values.

        LCR meter

I purchased and built this unit. http://www.aade.com/lcmeter.htm

It was a fun project. I also built the EPE "PIC" based LCF meter. These are both very nice units that can compete with the 878.

          BK 878

I also have the BK 878 and like it a lot. Connect the coil, turn on the unit and it displays the inductance, hit a button and it shows the capacitance, hit the button again and it shows the resistance. I find it to be handy.
          Good luck,
          FJ
