  • Coil Parameters

I have a spreadsheet I put together that will compute coil parameters. It is based on the old Radio Amateurs Handbook formulas but the results has a check to make sure other formulas are sympatico. It is kind of crude but works for me in computations. I am designing a new detector and have some questions on coil design parms.

A basic question is what is the best inductance (mirco Henries) to use. Is higher inductance better for depth and sensitivity for metals (specifically Gold) in the ground? I am sure some of you have played around with this and have a heuristic or even a scientific answer.

Resonance of course plays a role in this so should the coil be impedance matched to the air, the ground or what??

And does anyone have data on ground impedance for varous types of ground and even beach salty wet sand?

From what I have run across it looks like bigger diameter coils are better for depth on bigger targets and smaller coils are better for small targets.

If any of you coil experts have some good advise in this area please respond.

If anyone wants a copy of my coil spreadsheet program let me know. Just no guarantees as to its wonderfullness (ha). Right now it runs under Quatropro but I can dump copies in other SSes.

    Best Regards,
