  • Hairline Crack in Coil....What to use to fix ????

I have a hairline crack in one of my coils where it was put together. I am not sure if it is all the way through. My question is what is the best material to go around the whole seam of the coil. I wouldn't be so particular but they don't make this coil no more. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Frank

    crack fix

    Frank,
I use a product called Lexel, you can find it at True Value, Ace, and most hardware stores. It doesn't smell like silicone, and doesn't speel like a lot of stuff. Make sure that you clean the coil surface good, you can just use rubbing acohol, and you don't have to put it on very thich, takes about 24 hours to cure.
    Hope this helps, Greg

        hope that helps

Lexel bonds real good and should seal that crack for a long time. Good luck Frank.

          how I would fix a hairline crack. . . .

          Frankallen,

The way I learned how to fix a crack is to use MKT. This stuff will disolve most plastics.

Since you don't know if the crack is all the way through, you can't open it and place a small amount with a Q-tip. What I mean, is on some cracks in plastic, like hailine cracks, they can be opened just a bit without causing the crack to become bigger. If you could open it, and using a Q-tip, just place a small amount of MKT in the crack, it would "fuse" together, and the crack wouldn't e there anymore.

To fix your crack, I am assuming that your coil is black. If so, I would then use MKT in a stainless steel bowl, and put in a plastic/nylon zip/tie wrap, and wait till it disolved. After it disolves, wait till the MKT evaporates enough so that the black liquid isn't so "runny", and again, with a Q-tip, get teh black liquid, and rub it along the crack. This would seal it and pretty much make it look like new.

Once you start doing it, you will realize how liquidy the stuff gets and how long you might need to wait for the MKT to evaporate. By the way, it evaporates pretty quick.

Are you sure you don't mean "MEK" ?. It Disolves ABS Plastics.
