Laptop Detector

Hi,
I made years ago such a metal detector. I was using a good sound card (24 Bit, 96 kHz). It was driven by a 1 W power amplifier and a low noise signal amplifier. I had two signal outputs (signal drive and ground balancing/fine nulling signal).
I was using this kind of coil:

It was able to discriminate and cancel all problematic ground conditions.
Good Luck.

Some additions:
Do not start, if you are not familiar with:
- embedded systems engineering
- real-time programming and processing
- digital filters, fourier transformation, digital signal processing
- etc.
I made this project using Windows XP on a simple 1.4 GHz Laptop. I was using 1024 sample window, enabling me round about 50-70 measurements per seconds. The output was signalled via display and another sound card (one for metal detector, one for your ears). The signal was processed like BBS technology (from 1 kHz to 48 kHz).
Indeed there is a big potential to make a good metal detector using only a Laptop, plus good sound card (pcmcia or pci-express), plus very simple hardware (amplifiers), plus state of the art coil.
I am sure, all the prior art will then sucks.

Thanks.
The software platform will be only on Windows XP (power save) and not on Vista (what a big sh.it)!
I can imagine to deliver the hardware part and a frame work source code with no important and intellectual property parts. So every one can start developing his own laptop detector. But this could take me some month.
