  • Fortunefinder Coil

I recently purchased this old coil online more out of curiosity than need.
Since it was easy to open I did a partial teardown and took photos.
Any further info on the Fortunefinder detectors would be appreciated. I am wondering if it could be used with the Voodoo.

for some people who think ESFI protection layer has to have low resistance.

Thanks for the images. Looks like a 10" coil. It has an interesting coil shield. What is the spacing between horizontal copper lines? Is the coil shielded just from the bottom side?

The coil is 10" diam. The copper strips on the shield are 1mm wide with a gap of 4mm between them and form interlocking copper fingers connected to two outer semi-circles around the circumference. The two semi-circles are joined by 1 continuous central strip with a solder pad for the cable shield connection in the centre. The coil windings are taped to the upper side of the f.g. shield then covered with foam. There is only one shield on the bottom.
I was surprised by the low inductance of the coils
I was only able to find a couple of mentions of the Fortunefinder detector online and got the impression that it was not particularly brilliant.

what capacitors and resistors you see there? thank you for your Home Work.

I am reluctant to remove the foam to see what is under it until I decide how I am going to use the coil, but external measurements don't seem to indicate the presence of any resistors or capacitors. I can get each of the windings to resonate at around 10khz with an 850 nF capacitor in parallel which would tend to preclude the presence of other C. I have connected it to my Voodoo board using an appropriate damping resistor and 850nF capacitor and it works after a fashion but with very limited range. I just need to find the time to experiment further but will post details when I do.

I finally got around to removing some of the foam and taking some measurements and photos. I took an (un)educated guess as to which was Tx and Rx and would appreciate suggestions. The wire seems to be around 0.6-1mm diam. The bucking coil seems to be on the outer coil. Click image for larger version
