I have a defective coil for a Compass Coin Hustler. How does one crack open the coil? Use a Utility Knife? Then once the repair is done, how is the coil housing put back together? One dealer said that it might be easier to just find a replacement coil but I like to tinker!

Opening A Coil
Joe (TX)
You will need the following to do a clean job.
1. A drill press
2. two "C" clamps
3. A small Dremel 1" to 1.5" fine tooth saw blade
4. A piece of plywood about 12" X 12" to clamp to drill press plate/table
5. Two small pieces of wood to act as a coil stop.
Here is how to do it.
Install the Dremel blade in the drill press so the blade can cut the coil housing at about mid-height or in a seam if it is visible.
Place two small wood blocks on the plywood to act as a stop. Angle the blocks to match the curve of the coil. Leave about a 2" gap so the saw blade can reach the coil housing.
Adjust the position of the plywood so the blade only penetrates the coil housing equal to the plastic thickness, between 1/32" and 1/16". Try 1/32 first.
Clamp the plywood board to the drill press plate/table using 2 "C" clamps.
Set the speed to high.
Press the coil into the wood stops and with the drill press running, rotate the coil slowly to make a clean cut around the coil housing.
Let us know how it works out for your coil.

One More Thing: Opening A Coil

Place one vertical mark on the coil to use as an alignment mark for when you fix and reassemble the coil housing. This will assure that the coil goes back together the right way.
Post a photo of the coil apart, showing both coil halves. Then I'll suggest a way to reasemble it.
