  • Garrett GTI Eliptical beast!

    Here is gift for Garrett enthusiasts;
    I needed large,nice coil housing to make powerfull coil for TGSL.
    So i buy Garrett Eliptical coil,expensive but very good...probably
    best coil for GTI series! There is housing made of good stiff plastic
    alloy and coil inside. Coil is coated with graphite mass, very thick
    so it fill up housing complete. Graphite is mixed up with some softer
    mass and it make it more resistive on eventual shocks...sort of elastic.
    Dont have clue what is this....
    So...
    I took chance to complete copy this coil datas and save for good!
    So, Garrett enthusiasts...you own me!

    65 turns (0.43mm with varnish) 0.4mm wire,
    58 turns (0.26mm with varnish) 0.23mm wire...
    Obviously it is DD coil.
    The rest of wirements inside is almost the same as on Scorcher coil.
    There is 680k resistor, few capacitors .....You should already been
    awared of Garrett coils arrangements....

    With this coil on Garrett GTI2500 is quite different machine!
    Very sensitive on small items,preferably coins...also reach great depths!
    Much better than Scorcher coil which came as standard...
    It is not imaging coil...same as Scorcher..
    Coil si made in such hi-profile manner, so hard to repeat its quality
    so i am hoping guys from Garret would not be pissed up much on me, cose
    posted this here...It will be very hard to make handmade which will reach
    original coil performances....Good luck!

    Regards!

    Hi Ivconic,

    Excellent information! Did you measure resistance and inductance before opening coil? Maybe good idea to cut a square slice from the coil and polish it. Then photograph so we can see a cross section of how they wound the wires. Any information on the resistor and capacitors, how to connect? Also maybe good idea to measure resistance of black mass shield material for 1cm length.

    Best wishes,
    J_P

      ..

      I am a bit off this Garrett thing. Eliptical coil is
      busted. I used only plastic housing from it.
      All wirement was in a small bulky,glued piece.
      I started to pull out components and destroy all.
      But it is the same setup as on Scorcher coil.
      I have schematic of it here.
      Did i mentioned 680K resistor? Now i lost it somewhere
      and looking on this schematic i dont see it,just 390K...
      Sorry,this coil was not my primar target so idint payed
      any attention on it when reassembled it....I payed a lot of
      attention not to harm housing....

      Anyway, you asked for resistances per 1 cm; i measured up to
      10cm here there are;

      1cm= 72 ohms
      2cm= 99 ohms
      3cm= 111 ohms
      4cm= 127 ohms
      5cm= 132 ohms
      6cm= 161 ohms
      7cm= 175 ohms
      8cm= 185 ohms
      9cm= 219 ohms
      10cm= 238 ohms

      About taking photos....I have low resolution camera,no use from it
      for shooting details...
      But coil is made in usuall mannr, nothing special except very nice and
      tidy work...very hi-pro...

      Thats all from me for this subject...
      Regards!

        ...

        I do not want to start war against manufacturers like Garrett and
        others. No i have full respect to those and their copyright.
        I want to stop local dealers to raise prices so much and take
        advantages on fact that we,ordinary customers are "pushed" to
        waste a lot of money at their shops,due fact that there is not
        any competitive bargains arround...closer.
        I have to go to Germany (nearest) to buy coil or some extras for my
        detectors...!? Or to waste huge money at local dealer....
        No, i would not do that!
        I would hack every available coil and present its accurate datas here
        on this forum...until manufacturers start doing something for
        us-customers for real...for a change.
        First step should be more serious inner control of their dealers and
        prices, second should be "first hand" of their products available at
        any country without any intercession and further wasting extra money
        on some frauds and thieves...

          .....

          It tokk me a while to find those photos trough 1200 cd's i have, with various schematics,photos...software...
          Here it is, fully cracked and measured....enjoy!
