  • Omega coil field

I think the magnetic field for omega coils must be very strange shaped.

Aziz, have you made a graph for it? Don't worry if you are too busy, just interested to know some day.

    Omega coil field

Simonbaker , Do you know if Omega has a link or a WEB-SITE ??? I heard the Omega Search-coil might be one of the best , especialy for use in areas full of junk-targets...........Please let me know of any information you have of this "Omega" and also its "strange shaped" magnetic field !!!!!........Thanks..........Eugene

      Hi SB,

      I made several coil visualisations:

      See on the TGL topic:

      https://www.geotech1.com/thuntings/s...=12692&page=78

and other topics. Just use the search option.

The Omega coil is not a manufacturer's name. It is a type of coil, like concentric, coplanar, DD, or OO. The TX coil is looped back on itself to produce a nulled area near the centre. The RX coil is then placed in the nulled region, and carefully positioned for minimum residual signal.

Carl refers to the omega coil as a "4B" in this article:

I guess it just depends which part of the world you're from.

I may be wrong, but I think that "omega" is not a brand name, but instead refers to the shape of the coil ( Ω ) . The receive coil is moved around until a proper null is obtained. The "Magnum" IB uses this configuration. Here is a link to that device:

          http://geotech.thunting.com/cgi-bin/...gnum/index.dat

In Fig.1 it is called a "pinpoint" coil, but notice the shape.

In Carl's "Coil Basics, he refers to it as a "4B" coil. See figs. 9 and 10:

Thanks Aziz, very good (I had searched but did not find it).

Strange indeed, but not as I expected.

In the three plane image, why is there a maximum on one side of the y-axis and not the other? Isn't there symmetry on the y-axis?

I would certainly like to see more pictures, especially with the magnetic field lines and vectors as you did in some other pictures.
