  • Is this coil compatible

    Hi All.

Could anyone tell me if a HOT HEAD coil for a Garrett Master Hunter CXII would be compatible with a Laser Powermax II, and what you would have to do to make it work if it was.

    Thanks for any help.

I do not have either of these coils, but I very much doubt that they are at all compatible. The Garrett and the Laser use different TX circuitry, and different TX frequencies. If the Master Hunter coils are similar to the other Garrett coils, then there are additional components in the search head, whereas the Laser only contains the coils.
Any reason why you want to do this?

      Thanks for your reply Qiaozhi.
I just wanted to experiment to see what performance I would get with a hot head if it would fit, the particular hot head I have came of a Garrett MH I picked up, I just didnt want to damage my Laser in trying, so thought I better ask first. Would it damage my Laser if I tried ?.
      Thanks.

Hello Fenlander , Qiaozhi is correct . Before you attempt to plug the Hot Head coil into the Laser II . Please check all the resistance values of your OLD Laser coil , and then the Hot Head coil . If they are not Identical TX and RX resistances , it will not work correctly . Also check if the Search-coil plug configuration is different , that can cause problems Too !!! Please search the Geotech Forum / Archives here , for possible Hot- Head or Laser Search-coil specifications. The more you research , the easier it will be to find a great Search-coil or Hot-Head made for your Laser Powermax II Best Of Luck...........Eugene

You are unlikely to cause any damage to the Laser - BUT ... don't quote me on that! I think the Laser uses a Colpitts oscillator, which is pretty robust. The main problem will be that (even without the extra passives in the search head) the coil inductances are going to be different. So the TX frequency will be incorrect for the Laser (if it manages to oscillate) and the coil phasing will wrong, which will screw up both the ground balancing and the discrimination.
