  • is it not amazing !

Is it not amazing that no info is available on the whole internet pertaining to coil construction . Or is it that it is available but not shared with others . I always considered that we were busy with a hobby , but must be mistaken about that. There are surely people among us that have this material in their files . Why don,t they share with us ? Are they in the hobby or are they trying to make money ? Well if there are still among us that want to share , I'll bet they would make a lot of us happy . Kees

    Hi Kess

I found an interesting link to a russian page about coil design a few weeks ago. I can't read it but the pictures says a lot......check it out! Maybe there is someone in the forum who can translate it into englisch.

    Regards
    Chris

          Hi Rudi

thanks for the info on the translator. I tried... I needed to translate it into German and Englisch. Than I need to combine both translations to understand what there was written. But there are still some unknown words that the translator doesn't translate. Either into German or English.

Conceptually, coils are easy to make. Practically, they are hard. Esp. coils that are inductively balanced, i.e. anything non-PI.

One barrier had been a lack of coil shells. We now have two sources, Bill Hays of Hays Electronics and Rick Schroeder. I just got one of everything from Hays, fixin' to get some from Rick, too. I'm also thinking of making a vaccuum press, for doing oddball stuff.

I'll try to shoot some photos of my mono coil technique, got a nice easy way of doing shielding.

Yes, please do post some pics if you could. I have been winding several mono coils and still don't seem to have the technique down right. I have been turning coil forms on the lathe that split to remove the windings, then wrapping them tightly in teflon tape to secure then. I have been using the spiral plastic wire wrap around the coil to space the shield away from the windings which is supposed to help with reducing the capacitance to the shield, and finally I used the aluminum tape that you referred to in the PI-1 article to shield the coil, leaving a small (1/4)gap as required. I tried every technique I could think of to try to get the aluminum to take solder for a ground wire but after trying 60/40, 63/37, flux core, solid wire solder with the 3 types of acid flux I have, and even lead free solder I was never able to get it to wet the aluminum. I also used a quite heavy high output iron. I finally just used a drain wire with about a 3/4 inch spaced spiral wrap over the aluminum shield connected to ground. I have tried inductance for the coil from 300 which Eric seems to favor up to 500 which you specify, all measured on my LCR meter. I have adjusted the circuit and readjusted the circuit, and believe it is working correctly. all this and I still can only air test a US nickel at about 5 to 6 inches and a penny and dime even less. If I am way out of line here on some key point please let me know.
                Thanks
