  • Homemade Sovereign Coil

Thought I would share a pic of internals of a 15X12 Sovereign DD coil I have been working on. I have built quite a few DD coils for my Sovereign GT. This configuration seems about the best. Larger coils I have tried were only more cumbersome and performance decreased. Finished she'll weight in at just under 16 ounces with a bottom bonded on. I use a little extra plastic in between the windings for support and to attach the bottom scuff plate.

    What wire are you using?

I make my own "litz" type wire for the TX and magnet wire for my RX. Some may dissagree but I have noticed that a coil made with litz type wire is more sensitive then using all magnet wire. At least that is what I have found with my Sov.

It looks very excellent. How do you make your own Litz wire? Is it just several wires in parallel? How many wires and what is gauge of each wire?

What is the little circuit on the coil and how did you learn what it was?

Do you have some air tests or other tests to report?

        Cheers!

cool work. what schematic you use for the coil tuning on a phase? what schematic is the coil of self?
          TIA

            Hi Simonbaker,

I twist several same gauge wires together to mimic litz wire. The small circuit board is a pre-amp necessary for any sovereign coil to work. It is similar to the factory pre-amp. As far as testing all I will say I will never go back to a stock coil again.

            kt315,

            Don't understand you questions.

            Sorry

              Sorry
I do not see usefull information from you. yep the photo is wonderfull but you do not give details of tuning and schematics.
so I also do not undestand these are FREE info or Top Secret.
be objective. give ALL DATA if you REALLY want share out your info.

              SORRY FOR BAD ENGLISH!

There is plenty of info on this forum about tuning coils if you look around. I have no schematics for anything. I'm basically a seat of your pants guy. I just jump in and play around until I get it to work. Again sorry but I can not help you.

                  How about this? :

What componenst comprise the pre amp circuit?

How many turns of wire are you using?

Thanks for posting that ivconic. That is the original sovereign pre-amp. There have been some changes since that design was used, but it still works just fine.

As far as turns. It does change depending on coil size and I don't count. I believe TX is about 40 and your RX is about 25. When I build a coil I over wind then remove turns while checking inductance and resistance until I'm near factory specs. Hope that helps you.

Amazing that power is stolen from the TX coil to power the preamp. You'd think that would limit the Q of the coil. Maybe it's insignificant, but....

                        Thoughts Aziz?

I guess proof is in the pudding, it's a successful design. Alternative would be to run a power wire in the cable, why not?
