  • Custom 18 inch coil scores first silver!!!

I have to admit to a certain amount of satisfaction having made my first finds with a coil I designed and built myself, what a great feeling.

I took my custom 18x13 inch coil out for a test run tonight at a site that I spent months detecting to death. This is a site I gave up on after searching for many hours without finding even a paltry wheat but the site is notorious for deep old coins so I thought it would be a good place to test depth and performance compared with my other coils.

It didn't take long though the first find was more about target seperation than depth, I found this merc right up near a full size pull tab with tail still attached. It seems this dead zone between the center and outer edge helped quiet the pulltab while the center was over the silver. Where as with the stock 10 inch coil the pulltab was probaly hitting on the outer edge when over the coin masking it. Depth was about 7 inches plus grass. The grass was long, 5-6 inches so I'd say it squashed adding another 2 inches.

I next found a deep wheat that was corroded like most are at this site, then finally another deep green one which I was quite surprised to find was a 1875 IH when I rinsed it off at home. Three coins in 60 minutes on a single line I have probably detected 3-4 times, I'm a happy coil builder tonight.

    Hi Charles

Great!!! Now all your work pays off! I see from the image that you are using a spiral cable. Spiral cable often have high self capacitance values. If you would change it to a low capacitance cable (e.g. 39pF/m) you can lower the self capacitance of your search coil assembly (coil+cable). The search coil is than more sensitive to gold or silver objects. Have you tried something like this before?

I have not, its a royal pain to find a cable that works for the Minelab, 2 conductor each individually shielded. Best I could do was a 3 conductor with one individually shielded since TX really doesn't need to be shielded. I had the company put the 6 inch coil into the cable because the stock explorers require this since the coil cable runs up inside the shaft. Mine are outfitted with X1 probes and so the cable is on the outside. But I may try some straight cable and see if I notice any difference.

Have you looked at S-video cable? It's 2 conductor, individually shielded.

Thanks Carl, yeah I bought about 20 feet a while back, fits the bill but its a lighter guage than the factory cable which I would estimate to be 20awg. Still I would use it except the darn Explorer's require a short length of the cable to be coiled further complicating things.

I'm guessing they use some kind of heat gadget to create the coiled cables, I wonder if I could make one or buy a used one.

            Try your wifes curling tongues!

Gas powered ones work best though.

BTW, DON'T let he catch you as sometimes the plastic on the cable melts and well, you can guess..MESSY!!!
