            Coil Winder Sandwich mod

            Inspired by dfbowers coil making, I've added a top disk to my coil winder to make a "sandwich" which squeezes the coil into a thin space while winding.

            I will try to implement a "lacquer" bath to coat the wire with lacquer or glue like dfbowers does as it goes into the winder so that it will be glued together before removal from the winder.

            Hopefully this will help make accurate stable coils. I'm hoping that the tight space will make coil windings quite compressed and the inductance reading more accurate before removing the coil.

            We'll see what problems I encounter in actual use. Will the windings be tight enough?

            I chose a spacer (white material, foam board) that I hope is appropriate for 30 AWG wire. For different gauges, and different spacer is probably recommended.

            I abandoned the coil "counter" for now as it was mechanically feeble.

              Hey Simon,

              That looks good!

              What I might suggest is making some sort of spacer that is rigid, like a few wood screws in various spots where you can adjust how thick the coils comes out. (Install the wood screws on the bottom half only and use the heads of the screws as spacers.... then bolt the top half on.).

              Then, see if you can find a can of "mold release" agent to prevent sticky wires from attaching themselves to the wood (assuming you put the wires through a varnish bath).

              Also, I have been using "Spar Varnish" in my last few coils. Just avoid enamel as it can dissolve the enamel already on the wire.. (coils comes out very bad!)

                Excellent tips, thanks! I like the adjustable screw spacer idea (why didn't I think of that?). I was about to ask you about the anti-stick and varnish, you read my mind. I'll look for those. Enamel disolving enamel... yikes, wouldn't have thought of it! "Spar varnish"... shiver me timbers!

                I bought a dang drill press just to drill those holes, what next. Pretty soon my whole house will be an office deduction...

                (of course it didn't occur to me that an 8" drill press wouldn't be able to drill a center hole in a 12" circle.. doh!)

                  Thank you for sharing your project.
                  May I suggest replacing the top disk with a clear Perspex disk?
                  This way you will be able to see the coil while you winding it up.

                    Good idea! - maybe I'll make another. Need to drill top and bottom holes together so they line up. I'll need a more expensive drill because I use a "spade" drill for 3/8" peg holes, which probably wouldn't work with plexiglass.
