  • What material?

In the Minelab coils they have a piece of cardbord coated black on one side & it surrounds the entire coil assembly, what is this, a shield of some type?

Does anyone Know the name of this cardboard?

probably a graphite paint to act as a faraday shield i expect.

      Rov,

I suspected Graphite or Carbon etc.

Is it actually a shield or a conductor as it is connected to the RX coil via a tinned wire?

Try "AQUADAG" (Colloidal Graphite), it is used especially to shield & to minimise variations in the electric field.

It's good stuff but you didn't hear of it from me!

What shape is cardboard? Is it like flat cylinder (hat box), and coil completely inside?

            Simon,

Not quite like a hat box.

Coat some .015" -- or approx .5 --.6mm cardboard with Aquadag, cut a circle the diameter of the of your coil for the top.
Cut another LARGER circle allowing enough to cover the bottom of your coil & fold it up the sides to reach the top of your coil.
You will end up with very small overlaps around the sides when folded into place.
Tape this on just to hold it in position with Masking Tape "NOT" insulation tape because it contains Carbon.

Basically the bottom & the sides are 1 piece forming a flat cylinder with a bottom in it & just place the top circle with no sides on it & use masking tape around the entire diameter of the join to hold the pieces CLOSE together & job done.

            Hope that helps

I should have said Coat 1 side only--the outside, with Aquadag.
