Does anyone know of a website that describes in detail, the technical aspects of various types of coil designs. I'm not looking for a peticular brand or anything, just some good reliable tech type info.

look at the following site:

The folks at this site build very sensitive crystal radio sets that require special winding techniques to minimize the capacitance and maximize the "Q" of the coils to make very selective radios. This happens to be a good characteristic for a PI coil.
There are some web-based inductance calculators to help you wind the right number of turns of a particular diameter for a specific inductance, usually in microhenries (uH).
This site has a good article on building coils.
You can order blank coil housings in various sizes from Hayes Electronics. Do a web search on their name to find their web site.
No one site has it all so you must put it all together yourself based on your needs.
This is a good forum to start the coil information hunt!
