I haven't searched this forum yet but has anybody made a 12" coil for the XLT, Quantum, etc? I have a QXT Pro and would like to max out coil size for most depth on coins. The only commercial coil for them that I know of is the Hot Shot. I tried two but they became unstable on my QXT Pro for some reason. Either it's my machine or they don't like QXTs. Not sure.
I've owned many machines over the years and gone "head to head" with others on undug targets. Up until now the only machine I'ved used that beat the QXT depth wise on copper and silver targets was the Explorer but only in mineralized soil. In normal soil the QXT got me as much depth, but I set the QXT for max depth (no discrimination, no noise reduction, sensitivity at 18, listen for the high tones, etc). Combined with the fact that the QXT is lighter and less taxing mentaly to use (less ID and audio float on deep targets without work), is much faster at target seperation, etc.
Recently a friend bought an ETrac and we did some more testing before digging on targets. For the first time in unmineralized soil the QXT could not easily get an ID and high tone on two targets, both of which turned out to be silver dimes, while his ETrac sounded loud and clear on them with a solid visual ID. Now, since I run the QXT "all out" I'm not convinced that the newer electronics he's using is getting him the extra depth. I feel it's more due to the 2" size advantage he had in coil size of his 11.5" versus the 9.5" stock QXT coil.
So, I'd like to build a 12" or so coil and compare. If he's still got an edge on depth I'll spring for the ETrac (or XTera...which we'll be testing as well), but I'd at least like to max the QXT out first and see how it does.
I do have a background in electronics so with the right information on the coil specs, measurements, etc, I can build one. I also have some experience winding brushless motors which is sort'a similar in principal. Just need to find out who's done what with Whites coils in the 12" range.
