Coil wire

How critical is the wire size for winding a coil? The schematic calls for .024". All I can find is .022",.026" and .030". I'll probably use .026" but curious as to how they arive at a certain gauge for a particular detector. In this case I'm winding a "double d".

Hi Jason,

Are you winding a DD coil for a VLF? If so, then the wire size on the transmit coil is quite critical. If the wire is too small, the efficiency is down causing an excessive current draw.

The receive windings are not critical and one can use very small wire on them on a VLF. It is quite common to see the receive wound with 34 ga or so.

If the detector is a PI, then the wire size is generally selected for the current draw. Undersizing it a little normally isn't a problem. Again, the receive isn't as critical.
