  • In search of the perfect towable??

    I am also interested in very large (5ft or larger) towable search coils and PI units capable of running them (HH2 ?), any ideas or schematics out there?

    Hi Rob,

    It shouldn't be hard to make a 5 foot diameter coil. You need to decide the approximate inductance you would prefer to use and then use one of the typical inductance calculators.

    Many coils are in the 300 uh range, so that is a place to start. I suspect a coil in the 8 to 10 turn range will yield a 300 uh to 500 uh coil. A coil within the general range mentioned should work fine. You will have to extend the delay out a little to maybe 15 usec to 20 usec to get it to work fine, but that shouldn't be a problem.

    Now, simply find a suitable piece of wood and simply tack nails or use cup hooks set at the diameter you want and wind the necessary number of turns. Then lace the windings so they are snug, maybe wrap them so they can't come loose and shield the coil if you plan on using the coil at a delay that still detects the ground signal.

    Don't forget to read the article on fast coil making for general information even though you are not trying to make a fast coil. The fundamentals work for all coils. Here is the link;
