  • Calcium Carbonate

Anyone out there know of a place to purchase Calcuim Carbonate? From what I have read on the forum, and researched, it looks like it's widely used as a filler in resins to make them stronger and more rigid.. and allows us to stretch the use of more expensive epoxy as well.

Also, if anyone has used it, what is the optimum mixing ratio? I though about grinding up a pile of seashells that I have if nothing else..

    Thanks

Don, you want to use a filler such as 3M Cabo-sil, or Q-Cells, there are others that work also. Another trick for making coils lighter is to glue small chunks of styrofoam in the voids, then pot the coil with epoxy

Also select an epoxy that is slow cure. The polyester epoxies can "kick off" too fast creating heat and move your windings.

The ratio of filler to epoxy is by experiment on your first try. Add a little at a time until you get the consistancy you want. Take notes and add or subtract on your next mix.

    Regards

Generally you can save money by not buying from WEST.
      Few alternatives:

In need you can use dietary supplement calcium carbonate too (eg. coral calcium)

Think added weight when using any solid filler. Cabosil is made of micro hollow glass spheres. Chaulk, talcum powder, calcium carb, is heavy. May also, impart properties that may not be desirable to the finished product. If using West epoxy and filler it will become an even more brittle end product. Look for the special epoxy for electronic projects.

Somewhere there is an extensive post on making your own coils.

When you go to your website there is a button entitled "Enter Treasurelinx".
I have found the sensitive area for clicking appears to be over the words "urelinx". Clicking on "Enter" or "Treas" have no effect. You might want to take a look at this.
