I've done quick test, but not in low noise environment. The coil works, but I can't give exact air depth until later.

What worries you about the shield? (I have my worries also)

        Aluminum Shields

I am using shields similar to Simon on a 20 cm coil and it tests 30+ cm
        in air.

Just getting to the plastic shell making phase so do not have them potted yet.

I too am waiting for bad weather so I can spend more time on this project.

I encourage you to start a thread in the Tech or Projects forum and post some photos of your project, results, and ideas so far.

          Cheers,

            Hi Simon,

I am planning on doing that. I just want to get a finished coil so I have something more to show and talk about. So far things are looking good.

ok simon it looks like this(pic.) im hunting for cheap osc aspecialy analog this music card idea is not to good because i must make a lot of deviders and freaquency max is about 15kHz (in practice about 10kHz) so it's not enought eaven in this project. i have built good coils but i must calibrate this coil cap c6 or c9..i don't remember good thing is that works . i burned it once when i conected power suply backwords..i replaced few things and it works..now i'm trying to make a chasis for pcb from metal and then i will make a chasis for coil and i'll balance it as nice as it posible..meanwile best regards

Looks beautiful to me. What is the current status of it?

How about some pictures of your workshop just for interest.

my workshop? hmm.. it looks like ordinary room..but when i'm building some prototypes my room looks like spider's web:P i live in a flat so i don't have a special"workshop"..that's why i must do everything in my room..sometimes on my bead:P
                    best regards

Thanks for pics -- always interesting.

I know exactly what you mean -- similar for me. I hope someday to live in a house with a real workshop where I can leave everything set up. Then can work much faster and easier. My wife has allowed me to take over quite a bit of space, but always need much more.

I hope you can buy an oscilloscope. I think for you the kind that attaches to computer would be good.

So what is the current status of your TGSL? Working at all?

                      Regards,

my tgsl is still in progres. it works fine but i have to deal with few problems like coil cable. it's shealded but when i tought it it beeps. i conected it like it was said on forum but still beeping. i must make something like transmition to geb pot just to have more than one turn of it to put a corect value. i seen somewhere some kind of pots that have more than one turn..for exampe 10 but it's wery expensive so i'll make one just to check. that will give me a very precise geb pot. also i have to secure my pcb because oxygen and moisture is not healthy for it:P..some varnish or something else. finaly i have to make some more deep because it's poor.. about 20-22 cm.today i will try to make a metal chasis from stanless plate for pcb and maybe something more.. i have a free time just to begining of October because i'm starting the last semester of my engeniring studies and..if it all goes good i will have a engenear exam in february..so i have to learn as lot as i can..but i hope to continue my work with tgsl in free time. meanwhile i have to make a chasis because this spider web of mine is very disturing:P

                        best regards

I posted a few pics of an aluminum chassis with most of the covers off yesterday. The work isnt the best but you can get the idea of what I was trying to do.

                          Look in TGSL Experiments #286

I had results similar to what you are getting with my first coil last Winter, so I moved on to another coil which is a bit smaller and is pretty close to spec. (5.79mh tx, 6.23mh rx.) The new coil ground balances very nice with just a normal rotation GB pot.

                          Good Luck

                            hi jerry
this is my third coil and it has very good parameters : 6.5 and 6.003m
H maybe i'll build another one jus to check. i like the way simonbaker made his coil the way of my work was almost the same but i glued everything after turning and didn't use wax(wich was terrible:P) now i'll make some mesurements..nice to see your voltages in characteristic points and zero cross voltage, null voltage etc.

                            best regards

Do you have a potted-glued coil that you can take outdoors?

Don't trust depth measurements until you make sure you get away from power wires and everything else -- maybe your MD is better than you think.

Also, until the coil is potted firmly, I don't know if you can measure good depth because any vibrations can make noise. Certain noise will reduce depth, even though you might think it would just add noise -- no, it reduces depth too, I'm quite convinced.

                              Regards,
