  • SEF for PI?

Has anybody tinkered with the SEF style coil for a PI machine? I plan to experiment but thought I would ask the guys that are way ahead of me.

What are your thought of this new design and how would/does it perform on a PI machine?

    Thanks

Tell us what you know to date?

      Actually I know nothing Rov.

I believe it would be constructed the same as a DD coil. I only know that they are made for VLF because they give better detection depth than a DD while eliminating a lot of ground interference. I also think the detection area is smaller than a DD but wider than concentric. I'm not even convinced it would be a worthwile endevor for a PI detector since there is little concern for ground interference. Hence the initial question.

To date I have made DD, mono and "dual field style" coils for my TDI. I have also made flat spiral wound but found that the "dual field" performs much the same and is way easier to construct. I have had unfavorable experience using shielding paint (aquadag). I dont know why, I've taken all the precautions but for some reason it doesn't work for me. (hence the reason I haven't completed a flat spiral.) I use the scotch 24 shielding tape with good results.

I dont know anything either on these SEF design.
        but as to screening yes.
as for Aquadag the coating thickness an resistance per cm is important.an especialy the screen wire connection to this.refer to IB Gold on some of his posts? he is a perfectionist coil builder,an a Forums member Here.
As a special interest to screening material.a mag tape can be done to replace this with very interesting result? an is in use at the moment in coil developments.
        you have the Clue!

Thanks for your input Rov. I am not sure what you mean by "mag tape"... Magnetic? Would be an interresting use for all those old VHS tapes I've got...grin

Probably an SEF-type coil (I call them '00' coils) won't do much for a PI, except give tighter concentric-like pinpointing.

Thanks for responding to my question Carl, I had the same impression for the coil design but wasn't sure.
