Bucking Coil

I'm experimenting with eddy currents and now I need to build a bucking coil but the field seems very complex. Basically I have a transmit coil which hangs over a metal piece and below the piece I have magnetometer. Is there some easy to use, rule of thumb, for building the bucking coil when I have the transmit coil dimensions and distance between the transmit coil and the magnetometer? I use IC sensor as a magnetometer so the bucking coil can be very small.

I would need to see a diagram to better understand, but this sounds like a trial-and-error design.
