  • coil question

    hi guys.
if i bought a new coil for my minelab explorer machine and it is bigger than 15" in size. does a coil bigger than that size then become a mono coil which is then not capable of discriminating targets. or is it all down to the make of coil, or does it depend on what make of detector it's for etc.
any input would be much appreciated.

He means that an induction balance detector (like the Explorer) does not use mono coils.

so if i went up to a 16.5" coil the machine would still be abale to discriminate as normal.

Yes, but it will be less sensitive to smaller targets. You need to choose your coil to match what you're searching for. If the coil is too large, you will miss small coins and rings. Of course, if you're searching for a buried tank, then a really large coil is ok.

why i ask is, last year when out detecting with a mate in a field we had not bean on before i found a bronze axe head that you could tell the tractor plough had pulled up at some time. it was only about 7-8" down. i was only using a standard coil at the time. most cases when axe heads are found there is at least 6 or more together. their was 6 & a half one found in the same hole not more than a few miles from were i found mine a few months back.

so this is were the biger coil qustion came in. their's probably more axe heads deeper in the field and my standard coil probably won't get the depth needed to find any more. asumeing there is more that is.
once the crop is of the field later on in the year, hopefully i will have a bigger coil to have a better chance of finding some deeper finds.

In that case a larger diameter coil would be good.
