  • I want to build a mono coil for my TDI Pro

    Hello Everyone

I would like to build a 14" mono for my TDI Pro now I have never built one. With that said what size and type of wire would give the best performance? Also the same for the coaxial cable?

I would recommend a teflon insulated #22-#24 stranded wire for lower resistance and capacitance. More strands are better. I bought silver plated wire but the Guru's recommend tin plated to reduce stray eddy currents. The larger wire reduces resistance but the coil forms have a limited ammount of room to play with.

Mogami 2964 is a 75 Ohm coax with low R/ft. RG58A/U is a 52 Ohm coax with a low R/ft. The latter has a larger diameter but fits nicely in the waterproof coil connector. The Mogami is much nicer coax to work with and has better shielding.

A search of the forum under TDI will net a lot of info. In addition read the "fastcoil" PDF by BBsailor. Very good foundational info.

Thanks Ism, I will try the #24 tin plated wire, Also I am going to make my own covers and had an idea of forming the plastic right over the coil winding when finished and tested with my TDI, can you see any problems doing so?

When sourcing wire try for the Marine tinned wire with strands no bigger than .2 mm and with polyolefin insulation.

I see nothing wrong with your method however Hayes electronics makes coil forms for a reasonable price. You get the waterproof coil connector and extra plastic strips in a bottle for making an adhesive sealant using MEK. If you go the coil form route, I recommend getting an applicator bottle with small metal tips from one of the craft or hobby stores.

Hi wolff I think vortxrex from this forum sells teflon wires? he sells on ebay from time to time, ive notice.
but this wire is expensive to buy for experimental coils, and any losses in screening methods or wrong inductance resistance for your coil sizes and no benefit will result.
              regards rov
