Where to start on coil building?

Hi, I'm new to the forums but have been detecting for a few years. But having a tinkering nature or wanting to know how things work, build my own, etc I want to find out how coils work and where to start in learning how to build one. I think mono coils are easier so I'd probably start there. Whatever is easiest. I'd like to know what equipment I need (oscilloscope?) what kind of wire and just general instruction to build the simplest of coils to start. If I could build something that actually detected metal and understand why that would be great! I have a TDI pro now and thinking of a Minelab later. But the TDI would be my test machine for now. Can anyone point me to some beginner instruction on how to start making coils? Any help is much appreciated.
