  • Viking V5 Coil

    Hi all,
recently got a Viking V5 but the wire from the coil wire has been pulled out at some point and siliconed back in. It only detects when I fiddle with the wires and then hold them. I am fed up of detecting on my hands and knees while holding the wire(lol).

I have contacted Viking to see if they can sell me a new coil but haven't even had a reply.

What coil can I put on it as a replacement? Does it have to be a Viking coil?

I am unsure at what frequency it operates on but I am sure someone here will know so thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for that, really appreciate the reply. Unfortunately it isn't really telling me much I'm afraid. I can't see anywhere what the operating frequency would be on this detector. I am very limited in my electronic knowledge, just an avid detectorist so any more help would be grateful. Thanks.

The operating frequency is 100kHz, which is transmitted in bursts at a rate of 170 pulses-per-second (pps). The burst rate is used to create the audio tone.

            Hi again,
have had a reply from Viking and they can provide me with a coil. They want to know if its a recent model. It does have a long rectangular box as opposed to the current square type ones. I think they have just re-orientated them. On the PCB inside, it has Viking 1 written on it.
They are basically the same machines as the current ones I am thinking??? If they give me a current coil it would work I think. What do you think? Thanks again in advance.

            .

I've only seen the more recent models. But I suspect there may be a difference, otherwise why are they asking the question?
If it's a Viking 1, then it's definitely an older model.

As far as I know, the Viking 1 and 5 used the same circuit but with a different coil.

We'll see what they say. Sorry if I'm boring you with this trivia and thanks for answering again.
