  • What casting resin?

I've just finished winding a coil for my TGSL. I'ts sitting in one of Georgi's nice XP style coil housings waiting to be nulled and potted, but what should I use to pot it. I don't want it too heavy, but I haven't got a scuff cover so it'll have to be fairly durable, the best of both worlds!

    www.mouser.com.

    Search on: 832B-375ML

I suppose it depends on where you live though and if you can get it.

I would not chance using anything else, but I have heard of others using one of the Maplin products.

      Casting resin

You might consider this resin. It is very light compared to most. I usually add more microspheres to make it a little lighter.

I have not added any microspheres yet but I usually add some strands of fiberglass.
My 10" coils have been coming out at around 13 ounces.

Might want to consider hardness as well.. This stuff has a shore hardness of 58D.
The epoxy from Mouser has a hardness of 82! Plus, this is a very slow cure, which avoids excessive heat and shrinkage.

            Just my 2 cents..

              casting resin

              I use Robnor in work.

A twopart in a bag (with storage clip separator)

              Good flow, stone hard cure.

                Polyester is cheaper.

http://www.aeromarineproducts.com/el...ic-potting.htm I have been looking at the one in the middle urethane 75a. It seems inexpensive enough, what do you guys think? I am getting close to potting myself, and I tried west system epoxy, and its a poor choice.

Polyesters are poor choices for potting purposes unless going with very low shrinkage ones - where the price is again same as epoxy, and instead of 1% shrinkage with low shrink polyesters you would get 0.1% shrinkage or better with low shrink epoxy.

Polyesters also have styrene, MEK and other solvents which make it harder to use lightweight fillers such as expanded polystyrene, to cut down weight. Epoxies are easier in that regard.

I had some of this on hand and it seems to work nicely as well:
                      EpoxAmite® 100 Laminating Epoxy with 102 hardner

I recently used shafting epoxy from the golf club industry. It is a 24hour cure. Very hard glass like cure.

I will attempt to weigh it soon and post.

What I did is put foam sheet in the larger voids, so less resin is used - less mass.

The sheet I got came from eastcoast fiberglass - a good supplier.

Check out here for light weight fillers

Epoxy was Golfsmith - not great value if buying, but I had it lying about in garage.

Many times. Good if you wish to make lite weight coil. You can cut it to desired shape. But need to be reinforced on surface by synthetic fabric and epoxy.
