  • Why & How connect coax to coil ?

i read here that you can use a tv cable (coax) to connect mono coil, but i dont understand how !

ok you have the center core to connect to one end of coil, but what about the other, is this connected to the braid ?

would that not null any advantage of the shielding ?

In general, inner coax conductor goes to the one end, braid and coil shield to another, connected to detector GND. Whit flat spiral coil design, outer side of the coil and shield goes to coax shield, inner side to center conductor (if coil is wired opposite, shield will slow it down even more)

      Hi there,

I am in the middle of building a Surf PI kit and have reached the stage where I need to wire a coiltek DD coil through a 5 pin panel mount connector and onto the PCB board.

I am getting confused with where TX, RX and shields need to go with respect to the 2 coil connections on the PCB.

      Sorry about the newby Questions!!

        Hi Max.

Its A PI detector so just a simple mono coil, no tx & rx, just one coil both ends connect to the coil connection on pcb.

Got my one working and brought to my regular beach where i used my garrett ace 250. the surf pi is at least 200% better !

          Thanks Ronbyrne,

I see now about now rx or tx but I think there is still shielding to find a home for on the board.

Glad you rate the Surf PI highly!

Or just realised the ace is rubbish !

The shield goes to ground, , however, i did not have the shield connected to anything and it still worked
