  • Design Tradeoffs?

Thank all you long timers for the hours of great informative reading
Was wondering if particular design traits can be compromised.
For instance, a Tesoro 9X8 (stock coil) on the Cibola and Vaquero goes fairly deep and pinpoints like a laser while a Minelab eTrac "can" go really deep but pinpoints like a battleship. Not a big difference in coil size.
Are there consistent tradeoffs that can be controlled, like depth, disc, accuracy, etc?
I understand that depth is mostly coil size and discrimination depends on circuit design, but doesn't it all come down to the "magic" of a particular coil?
Thank you in advance for your wise and thoughtful responses.

(I understand that depth is mostly coil size) quote: Yes if built to spec( and discrimination depends on circuit design, quote: yes and no, Discrimination starts at the coil, how well that imformation is translated is down to design and construction of the control assembly. In my opinion the coil is the most important critical part of any metal detector, if spec is not spot on you will always have a third rate detector no matter what electronics you feed it into...( but doesn't it all come down to the "magic" of a particular coil?quote: Yes very well put.
Thank you in advance for your wise and thoughtful responses.
    Your welcome
