Changing a few high cost components with less expensive doesnt mean they dont know what component should be installed. Comparing PCB copper trace width the counterfeit with the original will show that its made from the original schematic/data.

      That's 100% false.

First Texas manufacturers all of its detectors in El Paso, TX with the exception of 2 models. El Paso built detectors that have been counterfeited are the Fisher Gold Bug, the Teknetics T2, and the M-Scope.

Likewise, White's manufactured their detectors in Sweet Home, OR. Their GMT was counterfeited.

Garrett manufactures their detectors in Garland, TX. Their pinpointer and Ace models have been counterfeited.

The counterfeiters obtain an example product and reverse-engineer it. They copy everything identically, including the PCB layout, and rip the code from the micro. But you can look at, say, the ejector pin locations on plastic and see that they are not using the same molds, but they have made their own. There are very subtle differences to someone who knows where to look.

I worked for White's, I now work at First Texas, and I have been to the Garrett factory. I have personally been involved in a lawsuit against a Chinese cloner. I know what I'm talking about.

Yes, I failed to mention that Minelab has also been heavily counterfeited. Some people will point to their production in Malaysia but Malaysia ain't China, and the Chinese did the same thing with Minelab they've done with FTP, Garrett, and White's.

Yes, the Gold Bug, which is what I mentioned above. Supposedly they've also copied the Gold Bug 2; I've seen pictures but not an actual unit.

You always are putting a smile to my face.
One suspects that if there was equity and socialism in cave man times, we'd still be living in caves.
I noticed x-terra clones have 6 pin connector just like original. I wonder if they have same coils?

Typically the clones copy everything in detail. For the most part the copiers don't know anything about the operation, but they do know how to exactly duplicate something. The first GMT counterfeits were not calibrated even remotely close and could not ground balance. Later they apparently figured out how to do that.

smile on my face. you there do not know nothing about USSR and China. never i did write that China is communistic county. THATS VERY SPECIFIC usurpation mode covered by some false ideology. to give the tech and the production them is deeply your/american mistake and delusion. the socialism? LOL. you are crazy darwinist. i reminder you i'm Involutionist.

What puzzles me is that if they can copy any metal detector (I speak strictly of hardware) then why aren't there more copies of popular detectors?
                        Is it the software/firmware?

                          Didn't Garrett make those?

It does take a fair amount of money and effort to counterfeit a detector, especially all the plastic molds. So they mostly copy the Big Sellers, and many of those are Big Sellers because of the African market. That's why the GPX, GMT, Goldbug, and T2 were specifically targeted. In the general markets the Garrett ProPointer and Ace, Minelab X-Terra, and a few Fisher/Teknetics models were copied. I'm sure they would love to copy the Equinox, Deus, and GPZ but apparently those have better than average code protection.
