My hunting buddy, Fred is his name, finally found a dealer that had the Minelab Manticore in stock and ordered last Friday. Arrived Monday and I think I was as excited as he was. He's my friend so excitement carries over to people you know. Well, anyway, late Monday evening I receive a text picture of a terrible scratch on the face of the detector. I will say their QC must have been sleeping when it was assembled. Scratch can be felt. Oops, of all the different detectors I've ordered new, never.

Yeah we did comparison. My Manticore vs Quest X5, GoFind 40, and a diy. The best performer was the Diy yet slightly unstable but damn loud signal. Machine that costs 200 euro max. Target was coin similar to 1 euro in size 25cm in ground. Second was X5, diggable signal. Manticore was on par with GoFind without signal at all. I REPEAT: NO DIGGABLE SIGNAL. Settings: sens 30, multi-iq; all terrain. I used it for about 30 hours. Decided to get rid if I can.

Interesting approx 9 1/2" deep
What was the soil conditions, wet or dry.
Mineralization light, medium or high?
Colocated targets, iron etc?
Coin horizontal tilted.
EMI, audible?
Now I know air test are not a realistic test of ground depth but it will show a simulated detection realm.
It will give a snapshot of the detectors health so to speak.
Have you tested the Fisher F75 , Equinox 800 or the Whites TDI with your diy?

Light mineralization. Coin was put flat in the hole. No iron nearby. No emi noise. Very easy target. I have gpx4500, gp3500, fisher aq, tdi sl - all of these will have the target, easy. This can be due to software not being perfected? Anyway, huge screw up on minelab for releasing this one. Give it a quick test/comparison and return or sell it if you get similar results as mine.

My hunting buddy has one but I have no plans to purchase one for my self.
I am very happy with my Equinox, F75 and the White's TDI SL.
I know they have many issues to resolve.
I would still like to know the approximate air test with the stock program.

With custom settings on my Equinox 800 I can detect my 8" dime with very good results. Two way high tone and the ID is very close. The F75 also give a very good two way tone (low tone) but only iron ID. I guess I'll be keeping my equipment unless 1st Texas delivers something that really appeals to me.
