Simple method for testing coil shielding

I came across this simple circuit that can be used to sense electrostatic fields. I can only think that it can be used to test shielding materials for MD coils. Here is a demonstration testing the effectiveness of graphite covered paper. I did need to use a common ground for the shield under test and the negative lead of the battery. In this case, just connected to a ground lug on an oscilloscope.
