C Scope 1220 - B Charging / battery options

My recently acquired c.scope 1220B came with 2 x 9v batteries attached to the two clips in the battery compartment, I knew these wouldn't last long so went to Maplin to grab 2 x 6 AA battery holders

What's my charging options here, I don't have enough chargers to charge all 12 AA's at once so will either charge them as 2 x 9v blocks (wouldn't have a clue on what charger to use or how long to charge) or charge both blocks via the dc charging socket on the 1220B itself.

I'm guessing the charging socket would be the best option but what voltage is needed, is it 9v or 18v, does the metal detector have an Inbuilt charger circuit ?

I have a bench supply that will output 0-30v at 0 - 5amp, I'm hoping I can use that as the dc charging source.

I'm thinking opposite. There is nothing wrong with 9V cubes. They have a small capacity, but your machine is not that power hungry, and it is very easy to have a spare pair of rechargeable 9V cubes in your pocket.

Recently I bought a pair of rechargeable cubes in Lidl and they work just fine. My IGSL is not that power hungry, so one cube is good for more than 3 long runs, so I don't have a real need for any beefier batteries with this rig.

I'm not running a power hungry VDI, or any other power hog, so li'l cubes are just fine. My charger (with conditioning) accepts a pair of them, so they are the keepers. Just stick them in and relax.

To charge a set of NiMH batteries properly and unattended you need 1/10 capacity current over 14 hours, and that's a gentle cycle. Fast chargers need extra monitoring. So your 30V power supply with some resistor dimensioned to achieve 1/10 capacity current should get you there.

I honestly thought my detector would eat up pp3's in no time, but if they are good for at least a couple of long sessions then I'm fine with that

I'll grab a couple of ebay (sadly aldi/lidl don't have any offers for batteries at the moment, I use the exact same make of batteries in my 62s GPS and find they are brilliant.)

For you guys/gals using rechargeables....I would consider investing in eneloop batteries. The shelf life between charges is amazing. They're a bit pricey....but are a very wise battery replacement
