  • Bench test car stereo

    I need to test my Pioneer AVIC-F90BT car stereo on the bench.

    Pulled it out of my car when it quit working over a year ago, and replaced with the stock stereo. Since then I've considered sending it back to the factory - it's out of warranty. But later on I read that it might be a software problem requiring re-initialization.

    Perhaps Radio Shack might provide a power transformer inexpensively which might suit my needs.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Wow complicated unit!
    From the manual are these specifications;
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/St...Manual0606.pdf

    Specifications
    General
    Rated power source ...............14.4 V DC
    (allowable voltage range:
    10.8 V to 15.1 V DC)Grounding system ................... Negative typeMax. current consumption
    ...........................................10.0 A

    From there you can see that this power supply would work,

    I suspect that if you wanted to build something you could use circuits like these;

    But the transistors will need to be on heatsinks, so that starts to entail some metalwork. And they aren't really easy to build. You're not really saving much by building either.

    The very best way to go is to find something used somewhere. You can get more for your money and you won't have to build it. One good source are hams (amateur radio operators) and their flea markets and for sale classifieds. I've seen some fantastic stuff go for bottom dollar. Even though you have to spend some on the power supply now, you can use it for other things. Kinda like other tools.
