Original Hiland 1Hz-50MHz Five LED Display Frequency Counter With Frequency Oscillator Kit

    1-50Mhz Frequency counter
This document describes the construction of small frequency counter with a
cheap PIC microcontroller and a few seven-segment LED digits. The main
features of the frequency counter are:
    · frequency range 1 Hz ... 50 MHz
    · five digits resolution (display for example x.xxxx kHz, x.xxxx MHz,
    or xx.xxx MHz)
    · automatic range switching with different gate times
    · optional addition or subtraction of a frequency offset (programmable)
    · optional preamplifier for the input signal
    · very low component count: a PIC 16F628, 5 7-segment LED displays,
    a 20-MHz crystal and a few resistors
    · optional (configurable) power-saving mode which automatically turns
the display off if the frequency didn't change significantly within 15
    seconds

Less then 1 hour of construction time.

Uses ? Not Much. LOL with only 5 digits it would be Ok for audio work but not much else. Built in Crystal Checker is some what worthless. Osc will not fire up with crystals less then 8 MHz as built. This can be fixed by increasing Cap Values in Osc.

The M8 Transistor Tester(Ver.12864) is a much better option. Not only does it have like 8 digit freq display it performs many more task.

    1. Resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, SCR, and most commonly used devices will automatically recognize and measure
    2. The capacitance line measurement capacity and ESR
    3. The square-wave generator
    4.PWM pulse signal generator
    5. Frequency meter function
    6. The graphical display of measurement results, easy and intuitive, the whole function is performed by a rotary encoder switch control, easy to operate.

Still not constructed the DSO 150 O-Scope. With the DSO-138 on hand not had a need.

Could be tempted to buy one just for fun, do they actually work ok ?

Counter works quite well with the 5 digit limitations. The Crystal Test Osc is Chit. You would need to put a switch bank piggy back board to cover better range. Yes it works. If you extended the Display off the PCB you could Box it and look cool. I'll use it or swap it off as barter material. LOL

LOL Heard of those a while back BangGood is better I think. Ordered Two of these and NO issues. just popped a 500G Sata in one for Mother of all Back Ups and a 80G Sata in the other for regular use. Broken Lap tops with SATA Drives are easy to come by. https://www.banggood.com/ORICO-2599U...r_warehouse=CN

Ordered another DSO 150. Seems I dropped the last one a few too many times. I like the stupid things for quick look see on things. While ordering I tried to put a tracking number on the order and ended up with two ordered. Didn't catch the mistake until too late. LOL Guess I have a spare back up for when I drop this one too many times, eaa? After putting this one together I may be able to do one in my sleep. The adjustment button on this one was funky and will not stay on. Looks like it may have been 3D Printed.

Being only single channel the DSO 150 can do quite a lot checking a detector but not any good to check phase relations. you can take a look at the over all timing on a PI step by step and see the receive signal decay. DO NOT measure strait off the coil. The DSO150 is limited to like 20P/P on the input. Handy for looking at your Sample Delay signal. The Freq Counter function is handy. It Can produce a 1K square wave test signal good for chasing audio issues. Good at letting you see noise issues on the signal train. For the Price $21.00 shipped here in the U.S. they are well worth it.

I built the earlier DSO 138 just for fun and practice surface mount soldering.

Found it quite useful being mobile. Used it to test car sensors

The increase resolution of the DSO150 from 10mV/div - 5V/div to 5mV/div - 20V/div should extend its usability.

If I was to build one again I would pay the extra and get the kit with the outer shell

I have a DSO 138 from days gone past. It works fine for all I listed above . Just not nearly as handy to use as the DSO 150. One thing with the DSO 150 is it's more persnickety on the power source then the 138. The 138 will run with just 6v and the 150 will not. Needs Two 9v batteries or AA battery block with 9v. Current hungry I guess. Some day I'll measure it . Maybe ??
