Can some one help me understand why GPZ type detectors are so much better for gold compared to the detectors found here ? ( trying to understand the technology compared to the PI ) And Is there any DIY kits for sale somewhere that would be good for gold nuggets detecting? admittedly if been watching a lot of detecting video's in the gold fields of Austria loll but here in Canada we do have gold and id find some of it hahaha I bought a IDX Pro board from Andy but if I understand right it is more of a VLF then a gold detector right?

Gpz is only another tool and only as good as the operator. Check the ebay site and you can see how many are on the market all ready. I know one old timer who has one and uses it a fair bit and does well but when it comes to a saltlake type country he puts it away and drags out the gpx4500 which I'm to believed it has been modified by woodie. I my self have ordered the equinox 800 to see how well it will go in the red dirt country.
I can not see the point in spend that sort of money on a gpz as a hobby but if it was to make a living out of it, I would put it in a tool list for the job

Of the Silverdog boards the MPP with KRinAZ mods may be your best bet. The microprocessor control of the MLs is their main edge, but it can also have disadvantages for the uninitiated.
Most PI's use two samples, but a third is needed to subtract the ground condition from the signal (correct me on this if I am wrong). This is done by the microprocessor in ML's, but can be done manually. Another means with both PI and vlf/lf is ground tracking, e.g. VSAT in the Whites GMT, but the Baracuda PI and others have a similar mechanism (correct me if I am wrong). With all of these an over-zealous manual adjustment can cause targets to be missed. Ground balance is the critical adjustment for vlf/lf's, especially on mineralised ground.
Basically with vlf/lf the higher the frequency, the more sensitive to gold, but less depth, and with PI the faster the coil the better, whatever machine it is on.
With a small coil on an IDX (6.59kHz?), you will still find reasonably small gold (with Mr. Bill mods). The old Garrett ADS machines (5.5kHZ?) found much, much gold in the 1980's, even in the mineralised ground of Australia.
Most modern lf gold detectors are from 19-72kHz, and gold-finding PI's have a main sample time of 6-15uS (requiring a fast coil). Happy to be corrected here also.

@Tim Thanks Tim for some insight I don't pretend to know much about electronics but if I getting what your saying is, the higher in the kHz range the better. I have a MMP but I only did a part of KRinAZ mods, If anyone can link a post to the full mod's. perhaps it be worth while getting all the components together for the IDX pro board I got from Andy after all. As for the "VSAT" if im not mistaken it is the rate that the detector collapses the magnetic field right ?or its recovery rate I think.

Forum/minipulse plus/completed minipulse plus projects(sticky)/post#7 will get you there.
VSAT is variable self-adjusting threshold.
The search/advanced search feature is your friend.
Like you my electronics knowledge is limited, as are/were my tools of the trade. I found the Hammerhead article quite useful for low-tech methods of calibration and testing, as well as some of the older articles on the Geotech1 front page.

Well the vsat mod makes a heck of a lot more sense to me know once explained lol, I will do it. I read the post of his completed build before, perhaps I will go though it again and pay closer attention. the hammerhead article you speak of is the one written by Carl if im not mistaken ? Im sure i have the PDF somewhere.
