Although RS no longer caters to the electronic experimenter the way they used to, they do still have some parts available, though a bit pricey. However, they are shutting down some of their stores and clearing out the inventory at good prices.

I recently went to 2 local stores... electronic components were 60% off, plus another 30% off if you buy 26 or more items... that's 28¢ on the dollar, which makes some of that stuff a Good Deal. I bought every potentiometer they had at 64¢ each... these are quality Alpha pots, have a real smooth feel. Bought bunches of other stuff, too.

Then I noticed the store fixtures were for sale, too. They have electronic components in these big drawer units, about 4 feet tall, 2 feet wide, maybe 18-20 inches deep. 14 drawers in each unit, really nice ball-bearing sliders... the cabinet frame and drawers are steel, but each drawer also has a plastic tray. These things are perfect for a home shop! There were 4 of these units, practically brand new, priced at $200 each... so I said I'd buy all 4 for $600... the manager said "lemme call headquarters..." came back and said "OK". Two for the woodshop, 2 for the machine shop. Have to wait until the store closes to pick them up.

You wouldnt happen to know if there is a list of closing stores out there would you? I went to one of my local RS's the other day amnd picked up a DEOX pen and a Circuit Writer for 3.29 each, but didnt much else for bargains.

No, I just stumbled upon a store that was closing. However, the manager knew all the other stores in area that are closing, as did the manager at another RS that was not closing. So call any store, and ask.

I just cleaned out a 3rd store, at 21¢ on the dollar.

I called a nearby store, and the guy told me that some stores were not going to carry components any longer, but that the components from those stores would be sent to larger stores. I guess that they are only having sales in cities where all stores are not going to carry components anymore.

yea i talked to the RS here in Oneida and they said they will be downsizing the stock at the mall stores and only carry cell phones and junk like that. but the bigger stores will be carrying the electronic stuff. i was shocked i hadnt been to a rs in many many years and i said to the guy "holy smokes you going to change the name to cell phone shack? i found those perforated boards like carl said to use on my survey meter project i just need a good book on what all those symbols mean in the schematic... sorry im not a techie just a guy who wants to save money by learning to do it myself. they didnt even have a book to recomend. im sure i can down load what those symbols mean on the net. in the mean time i have been away from wifey for two mkonths while i try to close on the old farm io have im off to see here this wek end so my project is on the back burner while i stoke the flames of passion this wek heh heh
