Although RS no longer caters to the electronic experimenter the way they used to, they do still have some parts available, though a bit pricey. However, they are shutting down some of their stores and clearing out the inventory at good prices.
I recently went to 2 local stores... electronic components were 60% off, plus another 30% off if you buy 26 or more items... that's 28¢ on the dollar, which makes some of that stuff a Good Deal. I bought every potentiometer they had at 64¢ each... these are quality Alpha pots, have a real smooth feel. Bought bunches of other stuff, too.
Then I noticed the store fixtures were for sale, too. They have electronic components in these big drawer units, about 4 feet tall, 2 feet wide, maybe 18-20 inches deep. 14 drawers in each unit, really nice ball-bearing sliders... the cabinet frame and drawers are steel, but each drawer also has a plastic tray. These things are perfect for a home shop! There were 4 of these units, practically brand new, priced at $200 each... so I said I'd buy all 4 for $600... the manager said "lemme call headquarters..." came back and said "OK". Two for the woodshop, 2 for the machine shop. Have to wait until the store closes to pick them up.
