  • RIP Don Lancaster

I was looking for an article by Don Lancaster and was surprised to run across his obituary. Don is probably my favorite tech author of all time, brilliant guy with a writing style that is engaging and just fun to read. He wrote countless articles and regular columns for various electronics magazines such as Blatant Opportunist, Tech Musings, Resource Bin, and Hardware Hacker. He even wrote a couple of metal detector construction articles in the 1960s. Don was very proficient at bashing pseudoscience and often took on the free energy nonsense, which I found especially entertaining. He was also really good at kooky humor, as exemplified in his associate, Marsha Swampfelder:

Don wrote some good books, which he had largely posted to the public domain as PDFs. Such as the TTL Cookbook, CMOS Cookbook, and Active Filter Cookbook. His web site, http://tinaja.com, is still up with all this available and lots more. Hopefully the family will keep it up for a while.

Don was a true Genius, along with Andy Flind, and many others.

Don wrote for American magazines and Andy wrote for British magazines. Yes, both genius. Apparently, on eBay Don was offering 128MB thumb drives of his entire web site. I'm gonna see if I can still get one. Meanwhile, here is Don's 1967 metal detector article:
